Saturday, 9/16 at GMUOn Saturday, we traveled to Fairfax to take on the GMU Patriots. We were all itching to play since our first game was cancelled due to dangerous weather in the area. It was sunny day, perfect for the beautiful game, and we wanted a win. We played hard in the first 30 minutes, missing a handful of chances just wide of the goal or over the top, but we managed to keep the Patriots away from our net. Right before halftime was called, though, the ball landed at the feet of freshman Katie Yancey '27 who calmly played the ball to our #1 playmaker and top assister, Natalie Mendoza '25. In true Nat M. fashion, she did what she does best and connected with her roommate and our top goal scorer, Natalie Vierra '25, who sent the ball sailing into the back of the net. Personally, I love that our first goal of the season was a team goal! We were able to maintain our lead for the rest of the game and collected our first win (hopefully of many)! Special shoutout to Evie Owens '26 for booking her first shut out! Sunday, 9/17 at UMD - RedOn Sunday, we boarded our carriages (Chrysler Pacificas) and embarked on the journey to ye olde College Park. 'Twas a gloomy morning, we trembled as the scary clouds inched their way toward the grass field on which we were to play. However, squishy socks and all, we persisted. Our warm-up was briefly interrupted by the automatic sprinkler system, that seemed to only turn on once the actual rain from the sky stopped... weird... luckily, though, they turned off in time for kick-off. We went scoreless in the first half, just trying to get into our rhythm on the grass and in the rain. In the second half, though, that's when we turned up. Senior attacking midfielder and honorary international (she's from Maine which is basically Canada), Isabella Banks '24, headed the ball down off a Terp goal kick to the feet of yours truly, Neema Mugofwa '24. I kinda black out when I play but when I came to, I had gotten the ball to the feet of Natalie Vierra '25 and she did the only thing she knew to do in that situation, buried it in the back of the net. Obviously, one goal wasn't enough for our always hungry Nat V. A few minutes later, when Big Izzy - not to be confused with lil' Izzy (Burton) - got the ball, she took it to the endline and cut it back to Nat V. who gave it a loving tap just beyond the goal line for a second KOK goal! Our last goal was truly a thing of magic. Not sure how I got the ball, but Nat V. made a beautiful run across the face of the back line onto a little ball that I slotted to her and... well you know the rest by now. Big shoutout to all of our new teammates for getting some of their first ever KOK minutes! MASSIVE shout-out to THEE Natalie Vierra '25, the best thing to come out of San Jose, Calif. since actually ever - this is not my opinion I literally looked up famous people from San Jose and can say with authority that she is better than all of them by a mile. On this day, the famous term "Hat Trick" was renamed the NAT TRICK. ALL HAIL NATALIE VIERRA!!! Fall Season
Overall: 6-4-3 | Division 4-1-2 GF: 23 GA: 15 Spring Season Overall: 3-1 Individual Stats Most Goals: Natalie Vierra - 5 Most Assists: Natalie Mendoza - 7 Regionals Recap (10/22-10/23)After a strong regular season, the GW women’s club soccer team was feeling confident heading into regionals. We were ready to face the competition anticipating games against Yale, UMass, and Delaware over the course of the weekend. With lovely accommodations at a nearby Marriott hotel, we rolled up to the fields on Saturday to see what the Yale Bulldogs had in store for us. Needless to say, the results were dismal following this game and their sheer intelligence got the best of us. Although the weather was absolutely stunning- it could not make up for the less than adequate conditions of the field. Used to playing on the beautiful turf fields at our lovely Mount Vernon campus, we were unprepared for the pristine ankle-rolling conditions at Friendship Fields. Coming off two losses on Saturday to Yale and UMass, we were not ready to quit. After a delicious meal provided by monetary donations from our many fans, we were fueled on chicken parm, and hungry for our next game. Sunday results against Delaware were not as expected. The competition and skill level was dead even for a majority of the match, however, Delaware was able to put away a few lucky goals and secure a win leading to another GW loss. I argue that a recovery swim in the Marriott pool would’ve helped with our performance in Sunday’s game however much of the team would disagree with my claim. Although the outcome of our regionals debut was not as successful as we anticipated, our team showed grit and determination which will carry over into next season. A final thank you to the most amazing captains who have contributed tireless hours and brain power to the well-being of this team. Kate Heslop '25Sophomore, Defender, Part-Time Vegan WE ARE GOING TO REGIONALS!!!!!!!!
We've been feeling the love and support from all of you all season and we so appreciate it! If you want to continue supporting us here's the info for regionals next weekend, and if you can't make it to dirty Jerz to support in person, you can donate to the team on Venmo @Hannah-Myerson. Stay tuned for a regular season recap and more fun updates to come here and on our various social media :) 10/1 vs American UniversityOn Saturday, GW unsurprisingly started our weekend off with a bang. In a must-win divisional match-up against American University, the ladies came out on top with a 2-0 win! It didn't take long to get the magic started. Three minutes after the opening whistle blew, freshman Izzy Burton ('26) found the back of the net off a beauty of a ball from, fellow freshman, Sydney Frelich ('26). The next 80 minutes were a battle, but we stuck to our game and kept the pressure on. Defense was a brick wall, as always, led by center back tandem Joie Koenig ('24) and Frelich. Mid way through the second half, the rain began to fall but Hurricane Ian proved no match for this squad. As the minutes ticked down and things got chippy, a fantastic build-up sequence gave way to Ellie Vaughan ('25) dribbling with speed in the box with her eyes on the goal. Knowing that the only way to slow down the absolute unit that is THE Ellie Vaughan is to play dirty, a center back took Vaughan to the ground and a PK was awarded. Though Vaughan's attempt from the spot was saved initially, the rebound was put home by, the freshman on fire, Burton once again. The gals put on a show today, whistle to whistle. WE've got regionals on the mind and we weren't going to let American change that. Nevertheless, we are onto the next. We go on the road tomorrow to face the UMD-Black team. THANK YOU to all the fans for braving the cold and cheering your girls on today. The support was felt! Raise High! Mary Glavey '25Sophomore, Midfielder, Bills Superfan Saturday 9/24 vs. US Naval AcademyThe George Washington University's Women’s Club Soccer team had, yet again, a successful weekend. It all began on Saturday in the game against the Naval Academy. Not much can be said about this game other than the fact that GW dominated. The ladies strung together passing sequences that Barcelona would be in awe of. The Naval academy barely got into the half of your favorite GW ladies, and even when Navy got close to goal the defense, lead by Joie Koenig ('24) at center back and Emma Myers ('25) in goal, Navy had no real chance. Despite the majority of the play being in favor of the buff and blue, GW was unable to score on the bionic keeper that tended the Naval Academy goal. Amelia Neurath ('25), Natalie Vierra ('25), Britt Riegler ('23), and Brittney Pickering ('22) were stand outs on offense, taking shots that only ter Stagen and this superhuman keeper could have saved. It was a tough fight to the bitter end, but GW never gave up and continued to put shots on net and generate scoring opportunities until the final whistle. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, preserving the clean sheet run for Myers and her defense. Sunday 9/25 vs. University of Maryland - RedOn Sunday, GW made the journey to the University of Maryland for their second game of the weekend. After the hard fought tie on Saturday, the ladies were hungry for a win. As the game started, it became clear that the passing patterns that were so eloquently executed the day before were becoming routine for GW, as we continued to string together beautiful sequences that had UMD spinning in circles. Halfway through the first half, Amelia Neurath ('25) sent a perfect ball outside to, defender, Sumara Bedward ('26). Bedward took a couple quick touches past the bewildered UMD defender then sent a shot rocking into the top right bins that not a single keeper could have gotten, giving GW a 1-0 lead. Throughout the rest of the game, GW continued to assert its dominance over the opposition, but was unable to convert on some other opportunities in front of goal. Neema Mugofwa ('24), Ellie Vaughan ('25), Britt Reigler ('23), and Brittney Pickering ('22) consistently sent in balls that threatened the back line of UMD, but GW was just unlucky today with those final shots. Nonetheless, the GW squad walked away with a well deserved goal, and, yet again, a continued clean sheet for Emma Myers, and the absolute defensive UNITS of Kate Heslop ('25), Joie Koenig ('24), and Sydney Frelich ('26). This successful weekend puts GW in a great place as they move into the second half of their season where they will face tough competition in American and the second UMD squad. Raise High! Izzy Banks '24Junior, Midfielder, Working on her Rhythm Sunday 9/18 vs. Johns Hopkins UniversityOn Sunday the 18th, the GW Women's Club Soccer team traveled to the lovely city of Baltimore to play Johns Hopkins University. The day started with an exciting twist at the local Ronald Reagan Airport, where some Enterprise employees refused to let our drivers leave. But we did not panic! One mini van and one New Jerseyan-driven Camry took off, with two more rental vans eventually coming behind them. The team arrived and suited up for a field that somehow lacked a corner. This writer may be a humanities major, but even she knows a rectangle needs four corners. But no obstacle is too big for this team and we didn't let this one stop us. We soon went up with a first time goal from Nedah Ahmad ('25), assisted by Nat Mendoza ('25). GW ended the first half 1-0 but we weren't quite finished yet. The second half saw a beautiful goal by Neema Mugofwa ('24), assisted with snazz and pizzazz from Natalie Vierra ('25). Rumor has it the Johns Hopkins defense is still recovering from broken ankles at the hands of Vierra's moves... Some say less is more. But for GWWCS, it never is. We had one more goal in us. This time, Sydney Frelich ('26), hit a peach of a free kick for your's truly to find and head into the back of the net. Yes folks, Britt Riegler ('23) has still got it. Your GW gals played an impressive game, working together and dominating over Johns Hopkins. The ref called the final whistle, securing a GW 3-0 victory over Johns Hopkins. Happy with our W, we piled back into our cars and headed back to the Foggy Bottom bubble. Special shoutouts to our back line who kept a clean sheet and protected our net! Another shoutout to our strong fan base of about 5 people (all related to players) who kept morale up. One fan, Duncan Riegler, brother to Britt Riegler, even made friends with the sideline ref. Stay with us as we battle through the season with one thing on our mind: Regionals. Britt Riegler '23Senior, Midfielder, Former HipCityVeg Vegucator Saturday 9/17 vs Georgetown UniversityAnother successful day for the GWU Women's Club Soccer Team! Today, the ladies went over to Georgetown to play a fan-favorite DC Derby! The team started strong with an early 1-0 goal by Natalie Vierra ('25) off a ball played over the unassuming Hoya back line from Britt Riegler ('23). Our fan section cheered so loud, we even got a call from THE White House to “KEEP IT DOWN!” Georgetown managed to squeeze in a lucky equalizing free kick shortly after. No call from the White House for them, though. GW was able to bounce back just before halftime after freshman outside back, Sumara Bedward ('26) drew a foul just outside of the makeshift 18-yard box. Vierra stood over the ball and made the truly professional decision to play it short to Joie Koenig ('24) who served it into the box where it bounced around before Natalie Mendoza ('25) tapped it in. We came into the second half stronger than ever and managed to keep our lead until a lucky Georgetown equalizer came in the form of a corner kick. As it got dark, the game came to an end. Shoutouts for today go to rookie Sydney Frelich ('26) who was the brick wall of our dreams in the back line and to Sophia Caione ('24), the newest addition to our team, who had her first minutes as goalie! Fear not GW fans, it’s not the end of the weekend yet! For tomorrow we are playing against the one and only John Hopkins University filled with scientists and doctors. Hopefully we’ll leave with a win and not any of their lab diseases. Thank u to all our fans for coming out today! Here is what some of them had to say after the game: “Wow so amazing,” said one GW fan. “I was really impressed by number 30, she should be on the national team!” said another fan. Flora Roy '25Sophomore, Midfielder, International Saturday 9/10 vs George Mason UniversityWe opened our season with a division game against GMU. After making quite the journey on foot to find the correct field, we got warmed up, manifested the rain away, and kicked off. We were down 0-1 at halftime, but we weren't worried. We went into the second half feeling more settled into the game and ready to get after it. It wasn't long before we found the back of the net. Natalie Mendoza ('25) served a beautiful corner right to the back post, which was headed back into play by Brittany Pickering ('22), for a dazzling finish off the head of our Main(e) girl Izzy Banks ('24). After we got one, we couldn't stop! Natalie Vierra ('25), assisted by Banks, beat a defender and the goalie for our second goal, and the goal that sealed the match for us came from another Mendoza corner that was headed (with conviction) into the net by Pickering ('22). Really, we had 4 goals on Saturday. We were robbed by a poorly-timed call on a play where there was no foul, but that (completely legal and clean) tackle set Banks up for stunning goal into the side-netting. It was a great way to start the season! Shoutouts go to Izzy Banks for her tactful offensive play and Joie Koenig ('24) for holding down the back line. Sunday 9/11 vs Towson UniversityToday's game against Towson was hard-fought. It was really humid out and not ideal soccer conditions, but we made do. We had a bevy of opportunities on goal in the first half but weren't unable to convert them. Towson's goal came from an impressive free kick, awarded after a (soft) foul was called just outside the 18-yard box. We went into halftime down 0-1 for the 2nd time this weekend, but we knew not to panic. We controlled the majority of possession in the 2nd half, working hard to stay in the attacking third, and that hard work payed off. Natalie Mendoza ('25) sent the ball from the corner flag right to the 6-yard box where it met the head of Britt Riegler ('23). The ball hung in the air for some time before falling just inside of the goal line into the net! Shoutouts go to Britt Riegler ('23) for getting us a point today and scoring her very first goal with GWWCS (!), and to all the newbies that got their first minutes this weekend and ROCKED IT!!! TLDRWe had an exciting opening weekend and came away with 4 points, after only having one official practice as a team! Thank you to everyone that came out to support us on the Vern, we felt the love! In the words of Coach Adam Murphy, "We've gotta stay hungry, it's almost dinnertime." Next weekend, we play away both days at Georgetown and Johns Hopkins, wish us luck!! <3 Neema Mugofwa '24Junior, Forward, Belieber Our tryouts have been confirmed for the following days and times at the Mount Vernon Campus Field:
